Can I have both custom and detailed error messages?

Hi there,

Ideally I'd like to display a custom message for 404 not found errors, but detailed errors for all other errors.  When I add the following to my web config, it turns any message that is not 404 into a generic 500 error message:

<httpErrors existingResponse="Replace" errorMode="Custom"><remove statusCode="404" subStatusCode="-1"/><error statusCode="404" prefixLanguageFilePath="" path="/FriendlyError.aspx" responseMode="ExecuteURL"/></httpErrors>

Automatic build/deploy of ASP.NET CMS modules using TFS2010

We are using a CMS system which is not included as part of our Visual Studio solution. When we develop for the CMS, we create individual projects within the solution for:

  • Widgets
  • Templates
  • Masterpages
  • Controls

Each of the projects has a designated destination folder within the CMS, so the website looks like this:

  • \\mywebsite\controls\mycontrol.ascx
  • \\mywebsite\templates\single-column-template.aspx
  • \\mywebsite\widgets\tabbed-content.ascx
  • \\mywebsite\masterpages\main.master

And each of their compiled assemblies need to go in \\mywebsite\bin\

Each time a project is built within the Build Definition's process template, MSDeploy is called, but I cannot get MSDeploy to place the .ascx, .aspx, and .master files into their corresponding subfolders while also having their assemblies placed into the bin.

Within the Build Definition's MSBuild Arguments, I have the following string:

/p:DeployOnBuild=true /p:DeployTarget=MSDeployPublish /p:MSDeployPublishMethod=WMSVC /p:MSDeployServiceUrl=myserver:8172/msdeploy.axd /p:AllowUntrustedCertificate=True /p:DeployIISAppPath="myserver/mywebsite" /p:Username={user} /p:Password={password}

If I modify the /p:DeployIISAppPath to be /p:DeployIISAppPath="myserver/mywebsite/controls", then MSDeploy creates a bin folder under that subdirectory, so using a custom parameter during the build process doesn't seem like it will work. Can anyone help me understand how I might be able to accomplish this?

Multiple connections from a web.config to multiple Oracle DBs

Completely new to Oracle connections and have limited knowledge of web.config files.  Please be patient with me.

I have a web app that when a user hits the site the web.config uses this connection string:

DIWS ODBC Connection String
add key "DIWSOdbcconnection" value=driver{oracle in oracle9201} server=2;dbq=stby;uid=XX_XXX;pwd=12345678"/>
add key=diwsserviceprovider" value="xxxx.xx.xxxxx"/>-->
add key="DIWSProvider" value="xxxx.data.subjects.diwsoracle"/>

The question is can I add another string for a "server=4" to be used while server 2 is taken down and rebuilt?

A use this connection to server 2 but if it is not available use this connection?

Hi folks,

I just upgraded from IIS6 to IIS7 on my hosting account for my main website. It was supposed to be seamless and indeed worked fine for a smaller website that I have running off the same account. However, my main site is down and refuses to come up. The errors I am getting on my main site are the following:

Server Error in '/' Application.

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.4241; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.4223

I've checked the web and this site and I have an idea it's to do with incorrect .NET versions or missing assemblies. However, both sites run on .NET 3.5 and the host (GoDaddy) console tells me IIS7 supports .NET 2/3/3.5, so that should be OK. However, the bottom of the error page above seems to indicate .NET 2.0 is being used. GoDaddy are being their usual useless selves and I am really hosed if I don't get this site up and running in the next day or so. An ideal solution would be to add lines to the web.config, but I'm willing to try anything at this stage. I've tried adding references, but I'm told they already exist.

This is really ruining my Christmas and if someone could help me fix this critical situation, I'd be extremely grateful. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Hi Experts,

I have developed an application of HRMS and Payroll Processing. Its on ASP.NET with SQL Server 2008 with Scheduled jobs. 100+ users are responsible to work on the application. Its basically an Intranet application. What I need to know is what server do I need to setup for it e.g. HP Proliant D380 G8, Dell R720. Also what technology I used to have it 100% uptime e.g. Mirror Server or Failover Server? or setup virtual machine to manage the server what should I do?

Please guide me...

Sohail

Hi

I read "How to: Create Custom Configuration Sections Using ConfigurationSection" athttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2tw134k3(v=vs.90).aspx and created required code that reads configuration sections successfully but when I assign a value to the configuration sections(properties that have setter), there is an error that says "The configuration is read only". How can I write to these properties and save to web.config.

Thanks

when I publish my solution, I'd like to set some values, say... a timestamp, autoincremented "version no.", etc. This I have no problem doing, I just don't know where the publish "event" takes place? Is there somewhere that I can put code whenever I publish my solution that will run when published?

Hi

I have this weird problem, when I run my website in VS debug mode it works fine, but wjen I try to run the release version through localhost it doesen't work it just give a error 500. And when I try to open the web.config file in IIS 8.5 it wont open, instead it give me this error.... "there was an error performing this operation". I guess somethings wrong with my web.config file but I cant figure it out, I even tried the web.config version thats being used on our server (which works), but that does not work either.

    </customErrors>

Image File Not Found

I have a image that gets displayed when selecting a record. It works fine in localhost, but when I publish it, it doesn't find the file.

code behind:

        If File.Exists("\\slots\programs\FTS\PHOTOS\" + Image + "-1.jpg") Then
            Image4.ImageUrl = "\\slots\programs\FTS\PHOTOS\" + Image + "-1.jpg"
        Else
            Image4.ImageUrl = "\\slots\programs\FTS\PHOTOS\No_Photo_Available.jpg"
        End If

It'll display the "No_Photo_Available.jpg" image. Now when I comment everything out except for this line:Image4.ImageUrl = "\\slots\programs\FTS\PHOTOS\" + Image + "-1.jpg" it displays the image. It is in theif File.Exists(). I don't think it works in a test environment. Any thoughts?

Hello,

I am using IIS7.5 in windows 2008R2 enviornment in my server. I wrote System.web.HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name to get the user name who is accessing my application. The above statement returns the user name in my local machine. whereas the same statement returns the null value while accessing the application via URL.

1) I kept authentication mode as "Windows Authentication" and i have disabled all other authentication.

2) I kept authentication as "Windows" in web.config.

But still i am facing this issue. Please help me if there are any other settings to be change in the IIS to get this resolved.

            if (online ==true)
            {
                Response.RedirectPermanent("http://localhost/logistics/unauthorized.aspx");

            }

//and in web.config i have added this

    <membership defaultProvider="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" userIsOnlineTimeWindow="1">

But problem is that this code only runs for 1 min a user tires to login after 1 min then he is able to login with same user name and password

I am using asp.net membership and C#.

How is the re-deployment process in ASP ?

I have made an application which is almost ready, using PHP's Symfony and its Doctrine ORM
However, I love .NET Entity Framework more, and really want to give it a try as it's way more powerful. But I am not sure what will happen once I have deployed version 1 of my application and version 2 is ready:
Say I am about to deploy version 2 of my application, which has a very different DB structure than version 1. How would the deployment process be ?

something like:
1 -> put site offline
2 -> download version 1 of the application with database (full of data) (or perhaps connect to the remote site directly using VS via webdeploy or ftp?)
3 -> locally update the database structure without losing the data
4 -> run tests and upon successful results, re-deploy version 2

With Symfony I just log in through ssh, run: app/console doctrine:schema:update and everything is updated instantly without even having to put the site offline, yesterday, with EF Codefirst I couldn't even change one primary key name without having to delete and recreate the whole database (losing everything inside); which is of course unacceptable if the database have production data.

Although I am prominent with .NET and C#, I have never deployed anything in ASP, and that's why I am unsure how is it like to work in production. The problem is that I can only afford purchasing a hosting account in either Unix or Windows and won't be able to change my mind, so there will be terrible consequences if I make the wrong decision.
By only knowing the deployment process, I will be able to know what to do.
